Indoor Plant Light & Placement

Assess window light, choose plant positions, and plan grow-light hours and energy costs. Connect usable light with healthy growth and watering checks.

Assess light where the leaves will sit. Window direction is a clue, while obstructions, distance, season and artificial light determine the actual position.

Survey a room before moving a plant

Observe the chosen spot at several times of day. Note direct sun and the shadow of nearby buildings. Northern Hemisphere north-facing advice does not apply unchanged in the Southern Hemisphere. Curtains and glazing can alter the picture even when the compass direction stays the same.

Watch new growth after a move. Long spaces between leaves, persistent leaning or smaller new leaves can justify reviewing the light, but roots and other conditions matter too. Acclimate a plant gradually when increasing direct sun rather than using a hot window to dry a wet pot.

Plan a measured grow-light setup

For a fixture, distinguish electrical watts from PPFD at the leaves. Use a measured value or the manufacturer’s map at the actual distance, then calculate daily light integral from intensity and time. Lux is weighted for human vision and cannot be converted to PPFD with one universal constant.

A timer helps maintain the chosen schedule. Enter actual wall draw and your own electricity rate to estimate cost. Compare growth and moisture checks after a schedule change; a brighter position can change how quickly the same pot dries.
